Sunning themselves poolside were several bros. Their skin was slick with some combination of sweat and tanning oil. They had blow-outs and bad tattoos and were bragging about how many Klonopin they had eaten the night before.
One of them sidled up to my chaise and offered me some vodka. I told him thanks, but that I already had my own drink. Intrigued, he looked into my cup- not a cup, really; I use a quart-sized yogurt tupperware to conceal my illicit drinks (organic yogurt is just so wholesome!). He asked what it was, and I told him that it was a cocktail with Pimm’s, prompting two other bros within earshot to asked what Pimm’s was. I told them it was a bitter liqueur. Blank stares. ”Sort of like Campari.” That was a dead end. ”It’s sort of bitter,” I said. They asked what was floating in it, and I told them I had squeezed a fresh grapefruit and a lemon and crushed some mint leaves and put in a splash of ginger ale.
They were really psyched when I let them try some. And though they were baked/zanaxed/klonopined out of their minds, they tried really hard to recite the recipe. One bro stood up and told me that letting him try that drink was the best thing that had happened to him all day, and I kind of believed him.
If you want to bring that kind of sheer delight into your day, may I suggest the following cocktail:
A very large splash of Pimm’s
A slightly smaller splash of ginger ale
A dash of simple syrup (optional, especially if you’re using ginger ale)
Fresh mint, torn
1 grapefruit, squeezed
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Muddle the mint and grapefruit juice/pulp in the bottom of a glass (or yogurt tupperware). Add the rest of the ingredients. Serve chilled, and with ample sunshine.
